Formatting for Kindle — Fix Your Ebook Before KDP Upload

When formatting an ebook for Kindle or converting a manuscript to EPUB, Word exports leave behind invisible problems: straight quotes, double hyphens, double spaces, and garbled encoding characters. This Kindle Format Fixer catches and corrects all eight common issues in a single pass — paste your text, apply the fixes, copy the result. No upload, no software install. Included in the Starter and Pro plans.

8 Kindle Formatting Fixes — At a Glance

Most formatting problems in Kindle ebooks come from how manuscripts are exported from Word or Google Docs. This tool fixes all eight in a single browser pass:

  • Smart Quotes — Converts straight " and ' to curly typographic quotes
  • Em Dashes — Replaces double hyphens (--) with proper em dash (—)
  • Double Spaces — Removes two or more consecutive spaces
  • Tab Indents — Converts tab characters to paragraph indents
  • Line Breaks — Normalizes CRLF and CR to Unix LF
  • Blank Lines — Reduces three or more consecutive blank lines to one
  • HTML Tags — Strips leftover HTML tags from web-based editors
  • Encoding Artifacts — Fixes garbled characters (’, é, etc.) from Word exports

Each fix is toggleable — apply all eight at once or select only what your manuscript needs. Included in the Starter plan ($19 one-time) — no AI credits are used.

Common Kindle Formatting Problems

Most Kindle formatting issues trace back to Word or Google Docs exports and copy-pasting between tools:

  • Straight quotes — Word sometimes exports straight (" ') instead of curly typographic quotes. Kindle renders them literally; readers notice immediately.
  • Ghost blank lines — Copy-pasting between editors stacks empty paragraphs that appear as large whitespace gaps in Kindle apps. See: ghost-spacing-epub error guide.
  • Stray HTML tags — Text from WordPress, Notion, or Google Docs embeds <br>, <span>, and <b> tags that render as raw text inside Kindle's XHTML. See: malformed XHTML error guide.
  • Encoding artifacts (mojibake) — When a file is copied through a tool that mismatches encoding, accented characters become garbled strings like ’ or é. The Encoding Artifacts fix reverses the most common patterns.
  • Double hyphens — Typing -- in Word produces a literal double hyphen in the exported file. Kindle renders it as two hyphens, not an em dash, unless converted.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Paste your text — copy your manuscript or chapter into the input box.
  2. Select fixes — toggle the eight options. Leave all on for a full cleanup pass.
  3. Run the fixer — processing happens instantly in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
  4. Copy or download — copy the cleaned text back into your manuscript, or download as a .txt file. Paste into your EPUB formatter or directly into KDP.
